    Best Way? - Split 50Mbit Pipe in Shared CoLo (VLAN, IP Addr, Router Iface)???

      A few friends and myself are taking over 1/2 cabinet in a datacenter.  I plan to use it for business, my friends have other plans (teamspeak, game/web/ftp server,  etc.)…

      Anyway, I was hoping to use PFSense as a sort of edge firewall/router for the cabinet; in which we could control / split up the bandwidth - but I have never set anything like this up before, let alone even thought about it.

      I just had a brief look through the forum and it looks like it would be possible a few ways but I just don't know what the "BEST" way to do it would be.  So I am basically hoping to pick some brains for ideas.  There are 4 of us but I am paying for 2 shares, so as a working example, I would get 20Mbit, they would be 3 x 10Mbit.  We are also given 20 public IPs (8IP for me, and 3 x 4IP).  Hypothetically I had come up with the following solutions:

      • VLAN:  Each of 4 VLANs would be allocated X amount of bandwidth; this would also separate all of our traffic? Each VLAN would have our IPs assigned to it.

      • IP ADDRESS:  At the simplest form, assign bandwidth limits PER IP - however this means each IP would have a "STATIC LIMIT", in other words, machines (IPs) that aren't using their full bandwidth at the moment - wouldn't be able to dynamically allocate their unused bandwidth to the other IPs in the users "IP Set".

      • Router Interface, I could add a 4port PCI Ex GIG Nic to the server.  And then instead of "VLAN" each user could have their own interface on the router and their IPs would get assigned to that interface.  Similar to the VLAN scenario, bandwidth would be set per interface.

      So these are just a few ideas I had come up with -  AGAIN, I don't know a lot about routing or bandwidth management, so if I overlooked even the simplest method PLEASE let me know!

      I hope after picking your brains I will have a good understanding of the best or right way to do this!
