I'm getting the above error when trying to boot the live CD. I tried both snapshots from today (20100401) and both md5s checked out. I tried installing using 2 different IDE DVDROM drives (neither the drive I burned the discs on). I've never had a problem with the drive I used to burn, nor the DVD blanks I'm burning to.

There's some info at this link, but it doesn't really look conclusive to me. People there seem to be suggesting media problems, but I find that unlikely in my situation. Are these snapshots bad? Is my DVD burner or both my DVD readers bad?

Have you installed pfsense before using the same hardware?

You could try disabling dma on the dvd drive on the console before pfsense loads up

        sysctl hw.ata.atapi_dma=0

The CD read failures during boot are normal on the LiveCD. Getting them during the actual install routine isn't.

Your problem is likely not related to that error.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found an older 2.0 installation on a hard drive that I had made on another host. It boots fine in the target machine, so I won't be pursuing the cause of this error message.

It wouldn't even boot to the point where you get to choose to install or run.

On some CD drives I get the errors for a few minutes at a certain point (typically after all drivers have finished loading), then it eventually continues.  Try waiting a while to see if it eventually works.

I left it for a long while and it eventually asked me where to find the root filesystem. I used ? to list valid devices and got a listing of the target hard drive (ad6) and the dvd (acd0, acd0t01) but neither cd9660:/dev/acd0 nor cd9660:/dev/acd0t01 succeeded in mounting the root filesystem from the DVD.

                Any ideas?

edit: Efonne, at what point would I enter that command to disable dma? at the FreeBSD menu?

edit2: I booted in safe mode and it managed to mount the root partition this time.
