SQUID Pros / Cons - Enable offline mode
-
Can anyone give a Pros / Cons list to using "Enable offline mode" in Squid? I'm looking for fast browsing and have lots of room to cache lots of pages, but I don't really want and adverse effects.
Will "Enable offline mode" speed up browsing dramatically or only marginally?
Will "Enable offline mode" cause websites to never be updated in the cache? -
From what I have read, it probably won't improve general browsing speed any more than leaving it off will. It seems to be mainly for letting people have access to the cache while the internet link is down or in a degraded state, so they're not completely dead.
IIRC it won't update the cache in offline mode.

So if you're online, will it refresh it's cache on pages that change?

It periodically checks, yes, depending on whatever settings you have configured. Things don't live in the cache forever, especially for dynamic content pages.
