      One question I have is..
on my PFSENSE LAN interface I have a linksys 54g router plugged into it, but I just want it to be a switch only.

Things I have done so far
1.plugging the Ethernet cable into the one of the four ports lan ports and not the WAN port (linksys 54g)
2.disabling DHCP and using the option act as router and not gateway under advance.

is there any other steps to take to make a basic home router just a switch?

That looks a good start but it probably depends on the basic home router.

ok thanks, and when you say depends on the home router, meaning other settings that particular brand may have..

Yes, other settings that particular brand and model might have.
