2.0 NanoBSD Auto Update snapshots do not exist yet (update: now they do)
-
The pfSense 2.0 beta NanoBSD snapshots do not currently use the correct update URL, so they will always say there is an update available. However, there are currently no auto update snapshots actually being generated for the NanoBSD platform to use on the System: Firmware: Auto Update page, so this notification has no meaning on NanoBSD at the moment.
For reference, the correct auto update URL should be http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/nanobsd/.updaters/ if/when they are available.
Manual update is still available in the webConfigurator or on the console, using snapshots from http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/updates/
-
The correct update URL has actually become http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/.updaters/ - same as full installs. The auto update snapshots are being generated for NanoBSD, and that update feature has been reported to work in newer snapshots.
-
If someone finds that Auto Update doesn't work from the snapshot they are on (likely before 6/23 or so) one more manual update may be required.
Also, if you've ever selected the update URL under firmware settings, just re-pick the last entry in the drop-down list for 2.0 snapshots, and save again.
You may also have to check the box to ignore digital signatures.

This post lead my Alix upgrade to broken installation. I followed up your advice and changed the update url to this: http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/.updaters/ and checked that no signatures needed etc.. Update fails after this. Now I tryed to update manually and I found this: http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/updates/pfSense-2.0-BETA1-1g-20100614-2326-nanobsd-upgrade.img.gz image to be lates update available. Now my Alix is totally halted!
Now I see from console following error when I select any option from menu:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ')' in /etc/inc/gwlb.inc on line 398Thats it. Dead as much it can be dead. I can't set up interfaces, I can't set up manually IP addresses I can't even do reboot. My pfSense firewall is now dead after this feature update. Not so nice work this time! I quess that you must have somekind nice trick to fix this mess up?

That snapshot is more than 3 weeks old and you're experiencing a known issue. You can read more about it here:
http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,26033.0.htmland in other threads from around that same time.
The link you used is the latest Beta1 snapshot. Scroll down further to see the latest Beta3 snapshot, or use

Thanks - I just wonder why in hell those broken images is available there if there is known major show stopers - shouldn't those be moved to somekind of archive?

If I know which ones are bad I can rm them. I don't recall the date range affected by that particular bug though. They are automatically cycled off after 45 days.
It's usually best practice to sort that list by date (reverse) and not by filename though, like this:
http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/nanobsd/?C=M;O=D

Yes thats true! It is so easy to pick "wrong" update image from long list. Now I succeeded with my update. Thanks again folks!

I added a couple quick pages to land on which will sort these properly. Hopefully it eliminates some confusion.
