Speed issues (adsl2+ home install)

Hiya all.
I'm having some speed issues with my pfsense box.
Hardware is a d210GLY intel board, with a gig of ram, and an intel pro 1000mt card.
pretty simple, plenty of power (1.3ghz celeron -m)
I run a draytek 2700 adsl modem in bridged mode. PPPoE is enabled with login and password on the pfsense box.
I have not set up any non "default" rules in the firewall, and it doesn't seem to matter if squid/traffic shaper are on or not. nmap squid and snort are installed.
The modem sync is about 11.5mbit, the pfsense box is routing at about 5-6mbit.
When connected directly to the airport extreme I get line speed (11~ mbit)Kinda strange cause I have had 11mbit through pfsense once before.
Any help would be appreciated.

First mention of the airport. When what is directly connected to the airport? The airport is connected to what? And what is the airport extreme? (If I had to guess I'd say I suspect its an Apple sourced Wifi Access Point and LAN switch but it seems a fairly generic name so I'm not clear about its purpose.)
Some simple diagrams would help clarify the configurations you are comparing.
