Snort custom rules?

I badly need to install a file of custom rules into snort (2.8.6 pkg v. 1.33 on pfSense 1.2.3 on Alix).

I see a few posts here on this but not a solution - but I also see that there is now a tab called "Upload Custom Rules" … which does nothing when clicked.

Any solution on the way - or any workaround others are using?
