Hostap mode and rum driver
-
I recently installed pfsense 2.0 snapshot on my firewall. One of my interfaces is a TP-LINK USB 802.11g adapter that uses the rum driver. My hope was to use this as an access point on its own subnet, however, I get kernel panics every time I try to connect to it. It appears as if this is a known regression in the 8.1R kernel (the rum driver in hostap mode):

As I am new to pfsense and FreeBSD in general, I have a few questions:
-
How quickly are issues like this resolved in FreeBSD?
-
What is the best way to track the progress of this regression, and to determine whether or not the changes, when made, have made their way into the pfsense 2.0 snapshot?
I'd like to stick with the USB 802.11g adapter and it doesn't appear as if any of the other drivers support hostap mode. Any help is much appreciated!

Time to fix things varies widely, but that's already been fixed and committed. It won't ever be in the branch we build from though, only security fixes generally go to a release branch. We'll get that patch added.

Great! Thank you for the update.

I'm still seeing the issue from:
http://www.listware.net/201007/freebsd-stable/104396-possible-regression-rum-ap-problem-under-81r.html
as of the Sep 5 17:43:03 build snapshot (i386). Should the patches already be in that snapshot or did I jump the gun? ;D

This particular patch was added and reverted. It may improve things for rum but it's obviously wrong, it panics with all Atheros cards. We don't have any hardware (or time) to replicate or work further on it with the upstream developers, someone with the hardware and the ability to get it running on a stock FreeBSD 8.1 can try to work further on it on the FreeBSD list thread or PR.
