Does this work without extra configuration when installed??

ok people bare with me .. LOL newbie on the roll ::)
used to IPCOP but send here because of the multiple wan features…
so first things first...
installed the thing... on harddisk.... go into the webinterface....BUT can't connect to the internet :(
now is my question is this normal ... maybe i first need to put in some rules or whatever.....i installed to begin a nic to the network and one nic to the wan which i cabled into my router which is behind my adsl modem..
choose static ip for wan and gave him a fix IP after my router just to test it ...for all i know this should work ???
can't ping anything .... not by domain not by ip adress on the wan :(
second can i choose as second wan a modem which is connected to a serial port ?? rs232
thing is that we have here a isdn alike connection which uses a modem specially made for this provided by the ISP which connect to the serial port...
now don't say change connection LOL as here in ukraine adsl is still VERY VERY expensive and the reason i wan to install pfsense is to route all my traffic to the isdn alike connection and to route my webtraffic (port80/8080) to the adsl ..
thanks in advance for any help so far

now is my question is this normal ... maybe i first need to put in some rules or whatever.....The default rule you need to go from LAN to WAN is already in place by using the factory defaults. Check your WAN settings. Something must be wrong there.

Are you sure your WAN is setup like this? If yes check your WAN IP and gateway again. Can you ping from the pfsense itself the gateway IP (webgui diagnostics>ping) ?

No. pfSense doesn't support any kind of serial or pci-modems. Only NIC-type connections supported. You should consider putting a simple router in front that uses that serial connection and use that as your second WANs gateway.

That can be done by creating the appropriate rules after both WANs are configured correctly. Check http://pfsense.com/index.php?id=36 . You'll find a tutorial for multi-wan there.

thanks for the answer hoba…
will look more into my settings...
one more question about the modem on the serial port...
i activate the modem trough a command in ssh... he will react as if he was a adl modem with rj45 connector LOL and he has a fix IP adress...
with your no answer do you mean there is nothing routed in the distro from ttyS0 or do you mean there is no support to get the thing working (connecting)...
thanks in advance

No basically means it is not supported. However pfSense is more or less a freebsd system so you might get things working if you know what you are doing but there probably is nobody who can help you with that kind of setup. I would go with the small/simple modemrouter in front and use that one as gateway as this saves you from reapplying your changes with each new update or updates breaking your changes.
