If you haven't already tried pfSense 2.0 BETA (can be downloaded from http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_HEAD/updates/?C=M;O=D) I suggest you do so. It includes the most up to date FreeBSD NIC drivers. A quick scan of the FreeBSD hardware release notes (http://www.freebsd.org/releases/8.1R/hardware.htm) didn't show tg3 but it might be known by another name.

The developers consider pfSense 2.0 BETA not yet production ready but a number of people report that it works satisfactorily for them.

Thats FreeBSD installation. pfSense installation is different from FreeBSD installation. For pfSense installation go to the pfSense home page and follow the documentation link to the documentation Wiki and/or the Tutorials and you will see both Tutorials and Wiki articles on Installation (and other topics that are likely to be useful).
