I have pfSense running on a p4 1.6G with 1G of ram(might be 512).  I'm using three Intel GB nics and am connected to the net through a 15mb cable connection.  The only packages I have installed are Country Block, darkstat(not currently working), and nmap.

I just installed EQ2X and it has to download the entire game.  Rather than constantly have it download bits and pieces as I play, I just left it open.  It was running fine, downloading at 12-14Mbps.  However, after a while, it just drops to almost nothing.  If I close and reopen the downloader, it starts running at full tilt again.

I'm trying to determine where the problem lies.  Where should I look to determine if pfSense is the culprit?

        To test: remove the pfsense.

(altough in every case i've read here on the forum with similar problems it never was the pfSense)

I'd rather not remove pfSense as it'd be a PITA.  I'm really more looking for ways to find out more about what's going on, both in pfSense and my connection.

So I guess my question is more "what diagnostic tools are there and how do I use them?"  From what I can tell, I'll agree that pfSense probably isn't the culprit.  But I want to know more about what's happening under the hood.

            Why a pita?
Just take a laptop and connect it directly to the modem.

What kind of downloader is this? You could try to find a download which is similar and try with this one to see if it's slow as well.
If it's a kind of a bittorrent: are you uploading with this client? Otherwise the other peers might be chocking your client (or the server thinks you've had enough for a while and others are in queue).

Have you let the download open when it get slow?
Is it ever going back up again?

              Everquest 2 Extended.

Are you using the streaming launcher?  If so, have you tried switching to the Station Launcher instead?

Seems like (from google) this is a known issue and most people recommend switching over to the Station Launcher instead.

AFAIK, they don't have the option to pick streaming or station launcher anymore.

I think part of the issue is my connection.  Apparently it's only rated for 1/3 of the advertised rate. :(

Do try a direct connection to determine if this is a line issue or really an issue with pfsense.
Some online game servers do change their IPs and the games which are not updated for some time (fresh installs and such) still hang on to the old IPs.

Haven't tried a direct connection yet, but did have a tech out today, and he found some problems with my line.  So hopefully that was the culprit.
