I currently have squid 2.7.9_3 installed and squidguard 1.3-2 .  I was wondering if there is a way to manually upgrade to the latest versions. Squidguard has a 1.4 out, not sure about Squid.

      thanks

This is what I do whenever there is an update for any of the packages that depend on Squid (or Squid itself):

1- Uninstall ALL Squid dependents FIRST: HAVP, LightSquid, SquidGuard, and lastly Squid.
        2- Reboot
        3- Install Squid FIRST
        4- Install HAVP
        5- Install LightSquid
        6- Install SquidGuard
7- Enjoy a job well done!

Is this assuming that pfsense will update it's addons automatically?

Well, AFAIK only the latest package versions are available from the GUI, so by removing and reinstalling you will always get the latest version. And no, pfSense will NOT update its addons (or itself) automatically.

To update to the latest versions needs of the human resources. Packages in pfsense must the first ensure the stable operation. I think to update to the latest version should be reason (new features, bug fixes).
