      Hi guy

Before i go into trouble of getting myself a old machine , i plan to run a proof of concept to see how pfsense best used for my family environment .

Either i create install into a CF as embedded  and run it on my home pc which i dont use it except for gaming.
Or test it in virtualbox setup.

I need your advice on this..

How it's used "best" is a very subjective thing.  What you want to do and what kit you have to hand will define, for you, what "best" is.  For instance, if you want to filter web access then you'll need Squid and squidGuard, which rules out embedded as an option.  ISTR that nano may be on option though.

I'd suggest that, for testing and evaluation, a virtual machine makes sense.  It isn't (IMO) the right choice for permanent use, but it's ideal for working out what you want.

Do you have any PCI or PCIe slots or a VLAN capable NIC and switch?

And is the NIC VLAN capable? If so you can make 2.0 work with that (and a VLAN capable switch). If you don't know please provide details of the motherboard.

If not then it doesn't make an appropriate firewall.

                    Hi,

if you have enough USB ports, you could try this adapter:
                    http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=133

I tried one with 2.0beta5 and it worked. For a home solution it should be enough.

Just be aware that there have been many reports that USB network interfaces are unstable and unreliable.

                          Is it this motherboard?
In which case you have a pci-e x1 slot. There are many cards that would fit.

                          Steve

Try Ebay.  You are probably stuck on getting a Single GBe NIC and having to use VLANs with an appropriate switch.
The RB250GS is a good choice for the switch.  Check in on Lowyat forums to find out more details on the configuration since a lot of TM UniFi users use it for connecting their own routers along with the IPTV STB.

For the NIC, I'd recommend getting the Intel PT Gigabit adapter.

most of the intel NIC's have a low profile option
                                look for this :
Intel PRO/1000 PT Server Adapter Low Profile

True indeed, maybe i rather get this RB250GS switch and run it

                                  ADSL-> Pfsense -> RB250GS ->  Workstations/ laptop  , but how about connecting through wifi such as iphone /Acryan ?
