Need a hardware recommendation for SquidGuard, Osi Layer 7 Traffic Shaping
-
I want to set up a guest network using pfsense and need a hardware recommendation for the following application:
- 15 user (guests)
- Wireless network with vouchers
- Squid package as proxy and to limit each users traffic to a certain amount
- SquidGuard package to block access to unwanted websites
- Traffic Shaping Osi Layer 7(high requirements?) to block filesharing traffic
- WAN connection per existing router (20 Mbit)
I have to say, I have no experience with pfsense - I played a little with VirtualBox to try out if it does what I need, but obviously I have no idea how pfsense would perform on a real embedded system.
I am aiming for an ALIX.2D13 (http://shop.varia-store.com/product_info.php?info=p887_pfSense-Komplettsystem-mit-ALIX-2D13–WLAN-und-Zubehoer.html)
or net5501-70 (http://soekris.eu/shop/net5501/net5501_70_board_and_1_slot_standard_case_en.html).At the moment I prefer the ALIX because it has a build in WLAN card and is preassembled already with an antenna.
I also could add WLAN to the net5501-70, but its even more expensive (http://soekris.eu/shop/wireless/complete_wireless_bundle_9220_2_en.html) and there is no pre-assembled version with WLAN available. What do you think? Would an ALIX 2D13 suit my needs? Mainly I am worried about the Osi Layer 7 filter to block filesharing, I think this requires the most performance.
Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure those boxes will be able to do L7 filtering and squid with 20Mbit/s. You're probably going to need a box with a C7 or Atom processor.

Ok, then I will take a look at a Supermicro X7SPA-H (Atom D510) for that.
Thanks for your reply!

I concur. An ALIX is too much for what you are asking.
