      Hi,

I have got a silly question. I know, what VLANs are  and how they work. If I assign several VLANs to my ethernet card on LAN side, then I have to assign a VLAN-ID for every VLAN but which ID has the parent interface ?

Does it make sense to use the parent interface if I use a switch with VLAN capability or should I only use the child VLAN interfaces ?

If I remember correct, I read, that the captive portal doesn't work with the parent interface if I use several VLANs. Is this correct ?

      Thanks for your help.

In general it is recommended to NOT mix use of parent interface with VLANs. There are complications if bridges are involved. See the FreeBSD man pages for vlan and bridge.
