IPsec…. should I go v2 or 1.2.3?

And after i chose a version, is there a guide out there to get this thing working with the cisco vpn client?

Currently I have 1.2.3 and these guides followed to the letter were no help to me:

both times the client (was using shrew as the guides asked) could not bring up the tunnel.
