Never stops updating packages?
-
This build: 2.0-RC1 (amd64) built on Sun Apr 17 04:12:07 EDT 2011 has been updating packages for over an hour now.
-
I am still getting: Packages are currently being reinstalled in the background.
Do not make changes in the GUI until this is complete. -
do you have physical access to the machine and can view what package is is stuck on?
Mine had gotten stuck before on re-installation of the packages a few days ago and I had to reboot, load the config without any packages, then reinstall all packages. -
How do I see what it is stuck on? The GUI does show squid as never starting.
-
well, do you have a monitor or a serial connection that you used for initial configuration?
what packages are you running? -

what packages are you running?Yes, but what am I looking for was the question. I am running squid, snmp, bandwidthd and would like to be running ntop but it is broken.
-
What type of connection did you use though for the initial configuration though? Is this running on a computer/server, virtual, or an embedded device?
If it had paused during boot on an embedded device, nothing will show via the serial (unless you have a continuous putty/hyperterminal running). If you are running it on a computer or virtually, the problem will show on the monitor or console screen.

I logged in via SSH just now and ran the shell and saw that is appeared to be stuck on deleting squid. I killed the process and it carried on and finished. However, if I go into package management it appears to think packages are still being added. Do you know what file it is checking for a lock?

From Diagnostics > Command in the PHP box, run:
clear_subsystem_dirty('packagelock');
That will reset the GUI's idea of the packages being updated.
Squid delete may have actually still been busy if it was doing an operation on the cache and you have a large cache tree with many files/subfolders.
