Growl Alerts, do they work with Growl for Windows?

  • I do no have a MAC so I don't have the standard growl software. I downloaded Growl for Windows and have not been able to get the pfsense alerts to register with Grow for Windows.

I ran the following command in pfsense: file_notice("test", "Test notification"); and I see a test alert in the upper right hand corner of the pfsense webpage. However nothing happens in the Growl for Windows.

Here is my config in pfsense:
IP:IP of my growl machine on local network
    Pass: password

Here are my Growl for Windows settings:
    Allow network notifications
    Allow notifications from websites
Allow clients to subscribe to notifications
    require password for LAN apps
    password:password.

After all this Growl for Windows still says:
    "No Applications Have Registered Yet"

My Windows XP firewall is disabled

Prob firewall issue I would guess on your windows box, sure your not running any other firewall?  I see this all the time - oh build in firewall is disabled alright - but they are running Security Suite XYZ that has firewall.

Or you not running the command right?  You need put that command in php execute box under diagnostic command

Or if your under notifications and you click save you should get one as well.

So first is from save, second one is from running that command.

I could set it up on a xp box I guess, but for sure it works on windows under w7 x64 sp1

  • This is my first time using Growl. I think that I did a dumb thing by fat fingering the password on the receiving growl PC. It is now working on Growl for Windows on an XP machine.

    johnpoz, thanks for your post.

Glad you got it working, but I have yet to actually get a an alert from it, either email or growl.. Not sure what it all is suppose to alert on?  Would be nice if you could setup the alerts you want to see, like vpn access, hit on specific firewall rule, etc.  Maybe you can??

I've been wondering the same thing… like you John, I've yet to receive anything other than the test alerts.
but that would actually seem par (and a good sign we're running smooth on major issues) according to this post by jimp:
