Hello, can anyone recommend a compatible external USB drive I can use to install pfSense?

I have tried to use an ASUS USB 2.0 Slim External DVD-ROM Model SDR-08B1-U for install, however, it fails with "invalid mount error".

      Thanks in advance.

I'd think it depends more on what USB port you're plugged into.  I recently tried to install Win 7 SP1 on a new box using an external drive and burnt through an entire day failing miserably.  Turns out that half the ports on my board required a 3rd party driver so they weren't bootable.  I had to use the very first USB port on the back of the machine.

        I can break anything.

Hi jason, I tried both USB but get the same result. I am running a SuperMicro X7SPA-HF motherboard with 2 USB connections. I was hoping there was a brand or particular model of CD/DVD external drive that works well with pfsense.

Have you tried using a pendrive ?

Since long time im doing this way, and works fine

            • Download your desired version, ex. "pfSense-memstick-2.0-RC3-i386-20110702-2208.img.gz"
            • Extract the "pfSense-memstick.IMG"
            • Write to a pendrive using "physdiskwrite"  ( im using a 2Gb pendrive and works fine ) http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php
            • Boot with your created pendrive
            • When prompted, choose " boot pfSense using USB device " ( press 3 )

Every drive I've seen works, you have to use option 3 "Boot from USB" at the first boot prompt on some hardware.

I've tried booting both using normal "option 1"and using "option 3", neither has worked for me. Do I need to download the "pfSense-memstick-2.0-RC3-i386-20110621-1650.img.gz" version" when using a USB device?
