You can have as many NICs as your hardware can handle. If an interface doesn't appear, then it's either bad hardware or the drivers don't support that card.

Try a 2.0 snapshot, if that works, it's probably a driver issue.

have u try on diferent slot or pc …

instead use multi ethernet card ...
prefer get intel ethernet card and created VLAN
to get work with VLAN must have manageable switch
RB250GS from mikrotik is cheapest one, will have up to 4 VLAN

urm,but all the NIC are brand NEW except the on-board NIC, and all the same brand that is D-Link…maybe i should try to re-inserted the NIC again to check which of the NIC that has problem...another question is,can i use the NIC in PCI-e slot??... tq for the reply

i already used all the slot since my motherboard support 3 PCI and 1 PCI-E and 1 on-board..maybe i should try re-inserted the NIC..thanks…since i new to pfsense and wondering whether it is because of  pfsense didn't support or NIC problem :)

If all of the NICs are identical, then it's a hardware issue - you either have a bad card, or a bad slot, or your motherboard doesn't like it, etc, etc.

Try to move them around in the slots and see if the problem follows the card or the slot. If it follows the card, it's a bad card. If it follows the slot, then it's your motherboard.

Its a while since I ran pfSense 1.2.3 but my recollection is that (like pfSense 2.0) it is necessary to click a "+" button to tell pfSense that you want to add a OS recognised interface to pfSense's list of available interfaces.

Please post the output of the pfSense shell command dmesg so we can see if the OS recognised all the interfaces. Alternatively, in the web GUI you can see if the "assign interfaces" page (or whatever it is in version 1.2.3) has a "+" button, click on that and then list the interfaces to see if you now have 4 interfaces.

The fact the NICs are the same brand doesn't mean they have the same chipset so you shouldn't extrapolate from "The NICs are the same brand" to "The NICS must all be supported." If they all have the same LAN chipset (and probably the same revision) then if one is recognised they will probably all be recognised but if the chipsets are different then you can't really be confident they will all be recognised.
