Dreaded "manual root filesystem"

I cannot get my system to boot by cd, external cd, or usb. 

I loaded an ATA hard drive with grub and the pfsense.iso

I get the "manual root filesystem…" error. It tells me the disk devices are: msdosfs/ ad6s1 ad6 acd0, but I cannot get any of them to work.

I am sooooo frustrated. Please help :)

A few years ago I did an install and specified the GRUB boot loader but it didn't work. I forget the specifics of "didn't work". I didn't investigate and thereafter used the FreeBSD boot loader.

It looks as if you are trying to get GRUB to boot the pfSense.iso file. That is unlikely to work. Have you followed the documented pfSense install procedure? (On the pfSense home page, click on Documentation, follow the links to the Wiki, then FAQ where you will find a link to the article How do I install pfSense to my hard drive?)

It doesn't get far enough for me to install to a hard drive.

I FINALLY (after like 10 hours) got the external usb to boot, but I end up with the same "manual root filesystem" error, but it does not give me any available interfaces :(
