PPPoE client over vlan interfaces

  • Hi all

I recently moved over to version 2.0 rc3 (I did a fresh install, not upgrade).
I have 3 WANs (WAN, OPT1 & OPT2), each going over a VLAN on interface re1. Everything is working fine when I leave the modems to do the PPPoE authentication.
Now, I want to set up each interface to do PPPoE authentication, but it doesn't seem to work.

I only tried one of my interfaces as I don't want to cut internet to my clients. The modem connected to OPT2 is switched to bridge mode and I've set up OPT2 for PPPoE.
Looking at the logs, I see this happening:

    Aug 9 14:28:31	ppp: [opt2_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 137 in 2 seconds
    Aug 9 14:28:33	ppp: [opt2_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 137
    Aug 9 14:28:33	ppp: [opt2_link0] PPPoE: Connecting to '*'
Aug 9 14:28:42	ppp: [opt2_link0] PPPoE connection timeout after 9 seconds
Aug 9 14:28:42	ppp: [opt2_link0] Link: DOWN event
Aug 9 14:28:42	ppp: [opt2_link0] LCP: Down event
    Aug 9 14:28:42	ppp: [opt2_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 138 in 3 seconds
    Aug 9 14:28:45	ppp: [opt2_link0] Link: reconnection attempt 138
    Aug 9 14:28:45	ppp: [opt2_link0] PPPoE: Connecting to '*'

From what I gather searching the forums, multiple PPPoE connections are supported in this version and the issue with PPPoE on VLANs have been sorted out?

Anyone have some ideas what I could do?

  • @foamz:

I have been running PPPoE on a VLAN to my ADSL modem for some months on a number of different snapshot builds without trouble. I'm now using the snapshot from Jun 21 and planning to upgrade to a newer build soon.

It might help to provide a packet capture from the PPPoE VLAN. (Say 10 to 20 packets.) The modem log might also provide some more information about what is happening.

Have you "cold" (completely disconnect power to modem, wait 10 seconds, connect power and power on) started your modem since changing mode? (Sometimes when changing parameters the software doesn't completely reinitialise everything it needs to.)

  • Hmm, tried powering down the modem and even rebooted pfsense with no luck yet.
I'll try and capture some packets, maybe it will enlighten me to whats happening.

One strange thing I've noticed though is when I decide to remove the pppoe interface from OPT2 and put it on WAN, pfsense gives some error (which I wish I wrote down) in the console and then becomes unresponsive.
This makes me wonder if there isn't something wrong with this VM as its running on Xen.

  • Ok ran tcpdump and it basically just shows that its trying to dial
