Ok I want to try to run a linux firewall distro. I'm going to try out pfsense. I had a question about the network interface card setup. I will need 4 connections. One for internet coming in, one for DMZ, one for LAN, & one for WLAN. Now instead of having a dedicated NIC in a PCI/PCI-E 1x slot for the internet "in" connection, can I use the onboard nic built into the motherboard, reducing cost & then I would only need 3 PCI NIC cards?

      Running pfSense 2.2-RELEASE (amd64)

yup as long as it is supported by FreeBSD.

If you're using 2.0, and you should be, then it's based on FreeBSD 8.1 so the hardware list is here.
Oh and FreeBSD is not Linux!  ;)
