I'm hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm a newbie to pfsense, and I'm trying to figure out how to get a full install on a Microdrive.  I've tried using the install CD using my main computer, and plugging it into my pfsense box (Firebox x750e), but no go. It seems like it's trying to boot off of the swap partition, which I assume has nothing on it from a fresh install, so it just stops after a few seconds.  I've also tried installing an embedded 2gb image, then from console upgrading to a full install, but that gives me several "read only" errors once the install finishes and reboots, and none of the console options work except entering Shell.

I'd like to be able to use any number of the packages which are available to pfsense, but with out a full install, I feel very limited to what I can and cannot use. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but haven't been able to figure out what by scouring through the forums and google. Any help is appreciated.

Does the Firebox have a VGA interface? The full install assumes it does, but the embedded assumes a serial interface for the console.

It does, but its a bit wonky with a odd sized pin spacing. There's also a pci-e x4 slot, but I don't have a card that will fit. I've been reading a bit more, and will try using the embedded kernel which outputs to serial instead of single cpu which only outputs to vga.

How does using the embedded kernel on a full install affect the usage of packages? Does the install run read-only just the same as using an embedded image does?

You may want to look at the nano installs (for 2.0), which allow limited package support. I'm not sure about the embedded kernel on the full install - searching the forum may provide you with more ;)
