New to pfsense, looking for a little help on what I need
Hello pfsense forum,
My roommates and I were looking into buying a new router (expensive :S) and I had read about pfsense and thought it seemed like a great alternative. I'm looking to use pfsense on my alt pc as I have no other use for it and as far as I can see the hardware is sufficient. What I am looking for is a couple recommendations for parts that I still need. I know for sure I will need a couple NICs but have not done a lot of research on the topic of NICs. I would like to use pfsense as a router for a LAN supporting 3 xbox's and 2 or 3 wired computers. I would also like to have a WAN that can support at least 5 laptops, preferably more.
Current specs of the computer I plan to use. Again I need to know if this is sufficient or if I need to upgrade some parts. Obviously I am going to need a couple NICs as previously stated so some recommendations for that would be great!
CPU: Intel Pentium E2180 @ 2.00 GHz
RAM: 2.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 400MHz(6-6-6-18)
Mobo: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5K SE/EPU (LGA775)
HDD: 78GB SAMSUNG SP0802N/P (PATA)
Current Network Card: Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller
I've read some posts similar to mine and noticed that often a "depends" is posted. If any more information is needed. Please post and I can try to specify what I am looking for in more detail. Thanks.
You might not be able to boot off the IDE drive for pfSense because of the Marvell controller. A SATA drive would be a better idea.
As to wlan support, I highly recommend using a separate AP or a wifi router configured as one.
In terms of processing power, the E2180 is more than capable for yours needs. Just grab some Intel PCI-E x1 NICs like the CT nics and you're good to go.
Better sell the pc and get an appliance. Will save you a lot of money on your electrical bill!
