Is it really necessary for ntpd to sync time several times per minute?

Where can the pfSense ntpd time sync frequency be configured?

It is self tuning. When you start it then it syncs regularly and backs off over time - that's how NTP clients generally work (as opposed to SNTP clients).

Well maybe that's the way it is supposed to work.  But it does not seem to back off much and not for long, if at all.

pfSense online for 40 hours and still syncing time at a rate of greater than 3 times per minute.  (30 minutes : >100 time syncs).
