I am trying to add a gateway that is on the second LAN subnet (assigned via IP alias), but using LAN the system refuses to save it with an error like this:
The gateway address 172.16.1.3 does not lie within the chosen interface's subnet.
As I can ping the gateway from the pfSense Shell I am assuming that it would work thoretically, but that the IP validation system is the problem. Can this validation be disabled ?

What version are you using? 2.0-RELEASE? 2.0.1-RELEASE? 2.1-DEVELOPMENT?

You can get around the validation by adding the gateway from the Interfaces > LAN (or WAN) page, click the "add a new one" link by the gateway drop-down and it will let you add a gateway without the validation. Then you can re-select the proper gateway ('none' for LAN, or the right WAN gateway on WAN) and do what you want.
