Startup beep

  • Just wanted to share a little something I worked on today. Attached is a simple script that will play a little piece of the Super Mario Bros. tune as a startup beep. All you have to do is drop it in /usr/local/bin/ (make sure is executable) and remove the .txt extension.

Then edit the /etc/rc file, scroll all the way to the bottom and you can comment out the beep line and add the new one as below:

    # /usr/local/bin/beep.sh start 2>&1 >/dev/null
    /usr/local/bin/beepmario.sh 2>&1 >/dev/null

Or you can just modify the line, whichever way you want to do it. I just did it for fun and to make my router a little more personalized, but it can be useful if you have more than one pfSense box and want to be able to know which one just started up. I am by no means a musician nor a FreeBSD expert, the notes may be a little off and the timing may not be 100% right, so feel free to change the script as you see fit. Enjoy it!  ;D

  • Sounds pretty sweet! Too bad my home router is virtualized so I won't benefit from it. Don't think I could justify hacking the work/production routers for fun.

  • Lol, is just a home router, plus is such an insignificant thing that I see no harm on doing it. Plus I did this on the secondary router that I am fixing as a spare router, just in case. So for now, this is a toy for me to mess with!  ;D
