Can we cut to the chase?

Are there any low-consumption-but-good-performance cp/mamaboard combos that are basically plug-and-play with pfsense, snort, squid, et al.?
I'm not an enthusiast, and I don't run a site at the moment. I do software development, and it takes all my time. I definitely don't need a hobby! I want the system to keep the bad guys out, allow me to run a vpn pipe when I need to, and that's it.
If I want a new fBSD box, I don't have to go through a lot of agony. I can pretty much buy the parts, assemble them, install the software, turn it on, and there it is. I'd like to be able to do the same with this firewall-et-al. build.
But as far as I can tell from reading here, everything seems to have problems, whether it's a poor design that has to be worked around, incompats that have to be worked around, marginal performance, high price, or high consumption. Surely that can't really be the state of the art?

Lots of fully tested, pre-installed, no muss no fuss options.

The few DIY builders you see running into agony picking hardware would have the exact same issues with stock FreeBSD. Anything that works with stock FreeBSD 8.1 will work with pfsense 2.0.1. The only place you see trouble there is where people pick hardware that wouldn't work with stock FreeBSD.
