System Advanced Notifications tab (How do you setup *what* to notify of)?

I'm new enough to PFSense that I keep seeing this page as well as instructions on how to set up notifications.
But I'm having difficulty finding out out what exactly causes the system to send notifications or where I might be able
to configure various items that I'd like to be notified about (such as WAN connectivity issues packet loss SMART errors etc.)It looks like PFSense can do this but I do not see how to make it work or how to understand better how to work with it.
I've got to be missing something simple/obvious here.Any clues? THANKS!
