My current setup is pfsense in my big ESXi server and a laptop running my GPS based NTP server.
I'm thinking of moving pfsense to a laptop so I can work on the ESX server and still have internet access.
The second thought was why not combine the pfsense server and the NTP server?  (since the NTP service takes nearly no CPU/RAM)
Soooo, I'd be needing PPS in the kernel.  How hard is that to manage?
Does the NTP server included with pfsense support NEMA?

Or is all this just too complex and I should just stick to using 2 laptops?

        pfSense_SMP.8:options    PPS_SYNC

It's already there. Though you might need to disable pfSense's openntpd (/usr/local/sbin/ntpd) and use the FreeBSD version (/usr/sbin/ntpd) instead. Probably not that easy, but I know of at least one other person out there who attempted it, though I don't know the results.
