    I'm having trouble getting PFSense to detect my Mini PCI-E wireless card. It's a WS-WNP672N from MonoPrice, which is based on the RT3070 chipset. Reasearch has lead me to believe that it should work if were to add the following to boot/loader.conf.local:

    if_run_load="YES"
    runfw_load="YES"

    But after several reboots it still doesn't show up in interface list.

    Now if I boot Ubuntu from USB, it detects the Wireless card immediately, so I don't think it's an actual hardware issue.

    Here is the rest of the hardware:

    • BCM MX965GME Motherboard (Dual Intel Onboard NICs)

    • Intel Core 2 Duo T7500

    • 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR2 RAM

    • 80GB 2.5" Hard Drive

      @Nealio:

      But after several reboots it still doesn't show up in interface list.

      Which interface list - the list reported by the pfSense shell command ifconfig or the pull down lists in the Network Ports column on Interfaces -> (assign)?

      Is there a "+" button on the bottom right of the Interfaces -> (assign) page? If so, click it to add a new pfSense interface name and you will probably be able to assign run0 to that pfSense interface. Then you should be ready to configure that interface. If there is no "+" button please post the output of pfSense shell command_dmesg_.

          Please reboot and provide the output of the pfSense shell command dmesg because that output might give a clue why the interface is not reported by ifconfig.

            It looks like it dumped twice, but I'll leave it in tact for the sake of troubleshooting.

              Something else strange. As you can see from the log, I'm getting the following errors:

              ipw_monitor: You need to read the LICENSE file in /usr/share/doc/legal/intel_ipw/.
              ipw_monitor: If you agree with the license, set legal.intel_ipw.license_ack=1 in /boot/loader.conf.
              module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (ipw_monitor_fw, 0xffffffff80470e10, 0) error 1
              wpi: You need to read the LICENSE file in /usr/share/doc/legal/intel_wpi/.
              wpi: If you agree with the license, set legal.intel_wpi.license_ack=1 in /boot/loader.conf.
              module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (wpi_fw, 0xffffffff806548d0, 0) error 1
              ipw_bss: You need to read the LICENSE file in /usr/share/doc/legal/intel_ipw/.
              ipw_bss: If you agree with the license, set legal.intel_ipw.license_ack=1 in /boot/loader.conf.
              module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (ipw_bss_fw, 0xffffffff80470cd0, 0) error 1
              ipw_ibss: You need to read the LICENSE file in /usr/share/doc/legal/intel_ipw/.
              ipw_ibss: If you agree with the license, set legal.intel_ipw.license_ack=1 in /boot/loader.conf.
              module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (ipw_ibss_fw, 0xffffffff80470d70, 0) error 1

              I'm not using INTEL wireless NICs, so this should be a problem. But I wanted to remove this from the log. So I added "legal.intel_wpi.license_ack=1" and "legal.intel_ipw.license_ack=1" to /boot/loader.conf.local, saved, and rebooted. After booting I ran DMESG again, and still got the same errors. Could it not be reading the /boot/loader.conf.local file? OR have I screwed up the formatting somehow.

              Current contents:

              legal.intel_wpi.license_ack=1
              legal.intel_ipw.license_ack=1

                Formatting looks correct. You may be getting two lots of boot messages if you rebooted straight away.
                Try doing instead:

                cat /var/log/dmesg.boot

                This contains only the last boot up message.

                    Mini PCI-E slots can use either a PCI Express interface or a USB interface. The Ralink RT3070 is a USB chipset hence we should look for signs of your device in the USB enumeration. Here is the relevant section of the startup output from my system:

                    In your most recent posting there are no signs of any attached USB devices other than chipset hubs. The earlier postings report an ALCOR USB hub and mouse.

                    What version of pfSense are you using?

                    It might be useful if you rebooted Ubuntu again and posted the output of the shell command```

                      Latest stable build of 2.0

                      It might be useful if you rebooted Ubuntu again and posted the output of the shell command which should show the IDs of the USB devices and the bus on which the WiFi card is connected.

                          So according to the Ubuntu dump, it appears to be a rt2800pci instead. I had previously found the information on my NIC from http://www.wikidevi.com/wiki/Winstars_WS-WNP672N, which incorrectly identifies it as an RT3070 using the RT2800usb driver.

                          So a quick search netted 0 hits on PFsense.org.

                          Searching FreeBSD.org retrieved a number of hits. This thread (http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=20998) peaked my interest, as the user was able to get it to run on FreeBSD 8.1, which is what PFSense 2.0 is based off of (I think).

                          Thread about it and FreeBSD 9.0 (http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=29081)

                              @Nealio:

                              Which explains why it wasn't visible in the USB listings in either Ubuntu or pfSense.

                              @Nealio:

                              pciconf -l -b -v -c dump:

                              Chip=0x1814 says Vendor = Ralink, Chip=0x30901814 says Ralink RT3090 chipset. To the best of my knowledge there is no native supported driver for that chipset. If you are wanting a WiFi NIC supporting AP mode I suggest you get a RT3070 (USB) chipset which could come in a USB dongle (such as the Tenda W311 or the TP-Link WN321G) or a mini PCI-E card (assuming your mini PCI-E slot supports USB interface). At the price of the dongles I would consider it worth buying one over spending the time messing around trying to get your existing interface working.

                                It may be natively supported in FreeBSD 9, so I'll leave it there for when I upgrade to 2.1. In the meantime, I have a number of USB Wireless adapters, they just won't work as elegantly as the the internal PCI-E Port.
