I write this to know if we're supposed to update manually the system, because on the dashboard it states (under "version")

      2.0.1-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Mon Dec 12 18:16:13 EST 2011
      FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p6

      Unable to check for updates.

Is this a bug which has to be resolved by updating via shell? Somethink like "portupgrade -af" or something specific to pfsense?
It seems a bit odd to me that in > 3 months no patch got released (not a whole release) coming from the Linux world. Strange it cannot check though.

      Thank you very much.

You're on the latest version, there are no updates. We only put out updates when security issues or significant bugs require doing so, where most Linux distros will throw every single updated package at you, as you may want or need some particular update, and the Linux kernel tends to have more security issues than BSD. Also given the very specific uses of our system vs. a general purpose OS, we know much better whether or not people need a particular update which in most cases you don't. With a general purpose OS, that's not a straight forward answer because they can be used in such varying ways. The underlying software we use is also far more limited than your typical Linux distros which tend to have a lot of bloat by default, and we're careful to choose software with good track records on stability and security, so we don't need to put out updates constantly.

Thank you for your answer, cmd. So the error message is more like "There are no updates avaiable" and not "Unable to check for updates"?
          Just wanted to make sure.

            Hi,

I've seen this "unable to check for updates" mesasge myself.  Personally I've put this down to DNS not resolving to pfsense (for me).

I'll explain my setup a little which may shed more light. (everything is Windows 2008 r2 server).

2 x DC, DNS servers.  1 is a physical (primary) box the other virtual under esxi 5.0 (secondary).  I am also running my pfsense under the same esxi box.  Pfsense is pointing to both DC's for DNS.  The physical box is added as the 1st and the virtual is the 2nd in pfsense.  Both DC DNS servers then point to opendns and google dns server addresses respectively.

During the day when I am away from home I power down the physical DC/DNS and rely on the 2nd virtual server to process dns requests.  All clients can still get to the internet (pointing to DC/DNS servers) fine but when I load into the pfsense management I always get the message we are talking about.  Clicking on the pfsense logo in the top corner to reload the page/obtain status updates I will eventually get to the "you are on the latest version" message.

Like I said I've put this down to DNS issues, possibly a mis-config on my own part but have not gotten around to digging deeper/asking about it yet.

I know not a "fix" of sorts but thought I'd just throw my hat into the ring.

            Cheers

The first thing to check is that your updater settings are correct.
Go to System: Firmware: Settings: in the WebGUI.
Select one of the 'Default Auto Update URLs'.
Make sure you select the correct one, i386 for 32bit amd64 for 64bit, for your system.
Don't select the development snapshots unless you really want that.  ;)

It worked. I though I tried that before though.
