I was testing a new PfSense 2.01  install and turned on email notifications.  I am now trying to turn it off, and I can't.  I removed all the email smtp infrormation and it still sends me emails.  Am  I missing something?

From what I'm seeing, as long as you unset either the server IP or e-mail address, it shouldn't send.

That is what I thought as well.  I even went in and put dummy info there.  Still sending messages.  Even after a reboot.

What kind of notification are you getting? What's the text in them?

Those are from syslog, we don't send syslog via e-mail.

The SMTP notifications are for things that alert in the GUI, like filter rules not loading, carp sync failing, ssh keys being made, or if a gateway goes down.

Perhaps your syslog settings are pushing entries to an IP that is then relaying them to you via e-mail? Check Status > System Logs, on the Settings tab.

Sure that's even coming from the firewall then?

I'm not sure we have anything that runs MDNSResponder, even in packages.

Good question.  Just took over for this company.  Need to dig deeper.

It would be from whatever machine claims to be wap0ac094  (perhaps a wireless access point?)

And so it was.  It seems I found a Cisco wap2000 on the network not setup correctly.  Sorry to bother the you guys, but it did not start until I had setup the email notifications on the firewall.  So first assumption was to blame the firewall.  Now what does assume do?  LOL.

                          Thanks.

During your setup did you allow a firewall rule to talk to smtp server??  That would be one reason you started seeing the emails from the wap after you setup email notification.

I actually had the firewall up and running for a couple of days testing it.  That is why it was so bizarre that it started within minutes of me setting up the notifications.

Not sure if you got what I was saying.  During your setup of email notification did you create a firewall rule that allowed access to 25 so you could send the notification?

If so that would explain why during your setup of email notification you started getting the stuff from the wap.  Because you then opened up rules to allow talking to a smtp server?
