FATAL ERROR: Unable to open rules file reference.config

I am getting the following error on the default SNORT install that I haven't ever gotten before:

May 5 19:58:10 snort[590]: FATAL ERROR: Unable to open rules file "/usr/local/etc/snort/snort_44858_em0//usr/local/etc/snort/snort_44858_em0/reference.config": No such file or directory.
May 5 19:58:10 snort[590]: FATAL ERROR: Unable to open rules file "/usr/local/etc/snort/snort_44858_em0//usr/local/etc/snort/snort_44858_em0/reference.config": No such file or directory.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

I've tried tweaking /usr/local/pkg/snort/snort.inc to no avail…
