          More information needed!  ;)

What hardware are you installing on, what version of pfSense are you using, which install type?

          Steve

The fact that you also tried some other cards that produced the same error implies something else may be the route cause. If it is booting OK can you give us the dmesg output?
What is your WAN card? What exact model of IBM with old cpu is it?
Are you installing pfSense from a CD onto an internal HD?

              Steve

IBM machines are tricky to install Linux, I remember trying to install Linux mint and it refused and refused (I think is the BIOS) and given it up in the end and sold it on the good old ebay.

                Try this…

                1. Google search http://lmgtfy.com/?q=pfsense+ibm
                2. Burn another pfsense copy (AT A SLOW SPEED!) from http://www.pfsense.org/mirror.php?section=downloads
                3. Another hard drive (Not the original that come with it)   ::)
                4. Nics cards have died or static etc?  ???
