Symantec Network Security 7120
-
Just wanted to get this into the board for anyone else who may encounter it.
As a long-time employee of Symantec, I either have acquired or purchased Symantec hardware from my company's former life as a firewall/gateway security company. I particularly like the 1600 series, due to their balance of power and performance. I take out the hard drive and put in a PC Engines CompactFlash to IDE adapter for these.
I recently purchased a Symantec Network Security 7120 appliance, from well-known and reputable eBay vendor "koukobin" who is known for selling really great refurbished and recycled gear with pfSense pre-installed.
The SNS 7120 was a network intrusion prevention and detection appliance. It features a Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz, 2GB DDR RAM, 6x INTEL 82551 Ethernet ports, a CompactFlash slot (via a built-in IDE to CF adapter), and is capable of supporting an internal IDE hard drive.
Only negative about the hardware is that it doesn't support gigabit ethernet. Not a big deal for me really.
There is a an internal header for VGA, but I haven't been able to obtain output.
If you're using CompactFlash, you'll need to disable DMA. See the following for instructions:
http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Booting_Options
I don't know if this holds true for hard drives attached to the internal IDE connection. I'll have to test.
I haven't found a way to use the LCD. It's a custom manufactured component.
More details later. Just wanted to get this posted for documentation and searching.

Nice. :)
How similar to the 5420 is this?
I'm fairly sure someone managed to get the lcd going on that.Steve

I'm fairly sure someone managed to get the lcd going on that.I don't have a 54xx for side-to-side comparison, but I believe they're extremely similar, if not running on the same motherboard.
I'll give the LCD a shot following the info. from this forum thread:

Unlike the Symantec 54xx, there is no PCI slot on the 7120 motherboard.
There is a 15 pin VGA header, but video needs to be enabled in BIOS.
The following thread may be of assistance with this: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,17843.30.html
I'll have to give it a shot at some point and report back, along with working to get the LCD working.

I am also using the 7120, in my home lab. Got it off of Ebay for $75.00.
Installing pfsense was exactly the same as the instruction for the 5420 except I did not disable ACPI.
I have ditched it for a dell poweredge 850 with gigabit NIC(6).Currently working on getting pfsense on my HP Neoware e140 and e100.
