Upgrade Netgate m1n1wall?

  • Hi All,

I've read, searched, read some more and I think I got it.  Looking for confirmation, lest I have something wrong and end up making the day miserable for myself ;)

    System is a Netgate m1n1wall 2D3.  It's currently running 1.2.3-RELEASE.

I figured I'd back up the current config by mounting a FAT thumb drive and tar'ing all of /conf to it.  (Perhaps I'll do the web backup thing, too.)

Then back to the console menu, select "Upgrade from console," and give it the URL for the 2gb nano upgrade (/etc/nanosize.txt says "2gb"): http://snapshots.pfsense.org/FreeBSD_RELENG_8_1/i386/pfSense_RELENG_2_0/.updaters/latest-nanobsd-2g.img.gz

Being as the device currently has 1.2.3-RELEASE, need I concern myself with the "fixes or updates to your BIOS or CF image" issues?

    Thanks,
    Jim

  • No help with this?  Even though I did my homework?  Guess I'll just leave it as-is, then.  Don't want to chance bricking it.

Can you not use the webGUI updater for this?

There should be no problem with doing this though I don't have an Alix board so I'm not the greatest source of info.  ::)

The bios issue shouldn't be a problem for you since you're already running 1.2.3. See:

I could, but what I've read on-line suggested to me the command-line method, via an SSH login, was better.

I encounter "shoulds" all day long, day in, day out.  If all the "shoulds" turned out to be reality, my job would be significantly more boring than it is ;)

Read it.  Perhaps I'm just slow, but does that mean:

    • I don't need to update the BIOS or

    • Updating the BIOS shouldn't be a problem
      ?

      Thanks,
      Jim

  • Since you're already running 1.2.3, your BIOS is up to date enough that the upgrade will work no problem. Doesn't matter whether you do it via SSH or the web interface.

You're right, poor turn of phrase.
