CF + PC + Bootstrap loader halts
-
Hello. I'm trying to install pfSense from (pfSense-1.0.1-Embedded.img.gz) on a 128mb CF card, to be used in a 400 Mhz i386 PC. Is that at all possible?
When I have written the image to the CF (with physdiskwrite.exe) and plugged it in my PC, the FreeBSD bootloader appears on startup, but then the system seems to halt about 1 second after the little timeglass-like animation starts turning about (|/-|/-..) . Thereafter nothing happens on the monitor nor does the Numlock work on my keyboard.
Have I misunderstood something important here? Can somebody help me?

Well I'm sorry! The fact is; the installationpage dosn't say anything about pfSense being ment for WRAP/Soekris mainly. Maybe it should be explained more carefully on the webpage, if it's such a often asked question in here. But nevermind I figured this one out on my own.
And in the future? Could you point me in the right direction instead of just telling me it has been answered before? It makes it so much easier for us newcommers who's been slaveing over this for hours - and maybe comes here for a break and some help. Tnx.

For those of you who (like me) is not running a WRAP/Soekris embedded solution, but on an ordenary PC and still want to use a CompactFlash (CF) card for storage. You can't use the pfSense-1.0.1-Embedded.img.gz ordenary image for this. It's WRAP/Soekris only. So what you need to do is getting the image from here:
http://shopping.hacom.net/catalog/pub/pfsense/
Otherwise you have to connect to your computer using the serielport because the monitor and keyboard is not supported in the small image. So do yourself a favour and download the image from hacom.net especially if you (like) me comes from m0n0wall and is used to work with that installation.
Look also at this topic for anwsers, it helped me: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,4557.0.html

There's a pretty obvious link on the download page (If you are not sure which version is right for you, visit this primer wiki.) that directs you to a list of the different builds and their differences.
