We have VLAN10 for File Server and VLAN20 for workstation.

I created a firewall rule, and computers in VLAN20 can talk with the file server in VLAN10 via private IP address. As the file server has a name (file-server), I want them to access it via host name.

Sorry, but I am a beginner of this area. It sounds like DNS and name resolution issue. At a glance phSense has DNS forwarder and Routing feature. Is it possible to let it act as name server? If so, which menu should I go? I believe that I just need to enter host name and IP somewhere.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Go to Services -> DNS forwarder, enable DNS forwarder, scroll down to to Host Overrides and add the hostname to IP address mapping(s) you require.

Yeah the host overrides are prob a better option than tiny dns for someone that is new to name resolution.  Depending on how many servers you want to resolve, if only a handful or two clearly the easier method.

That is right. DNS forwarder worked. Thank you very much for providing me the instructions!
