I had an August 23rd build of amd64. I ran the auto-upgrade from the web interface. The result is this:
      2.1-BETA0 (i386)
built on Tue Sep 4 16:39:17 EDT 2012
      FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p4

Please advise on how to go back to amd64.

        Save config … re-install ... restore config.

This is a way of almost all 64bit upgrades. You need to check your updater setting to make sure they are not i386.

You are right, the updater string was for i386. It was probably a leftover from a previous i386 install that I reinstalled to amd64 about a week ago.

Would it be possible to include an architecture check for the updater page, in case someone as stupid as me does the same thing?

That is not a bad idea.
