Alix 2d3 and QoS

  • Hi Everyone,

We have an Alix 2D3 that is working very well with pfsense (Real life DSL speeds are 18Mb down/0.95Mbps up). We wish to create a couple of limiters (or possibly just use priorities, haven't decided yet) so that our VOIP server will work well (It's needs about 256k upload at full use).

Will the Alix 2D3 be able to handle this, given that it only has a 500Mhz Geode processor?

    Thanks

  • It should have no problem.

The ALIX is able to process about 85 Mbit/s throughput.

  • @GruensFroeschli:

    It should have no problem.

The ALIX is able to process about 85 Mbit/s throughput.

GruensFroeschli, do you have first hand experience with this?  I've had trouble pushing more than 20Mbit's through an Alix with QOS (HFSC) enabled.  I know the specs say that an Alix can push 85Mbit/s, but I don't think that is with QOS enabled.

  • Yes this is the raw forwarding power (well, routing/NATing/firewalling) without shaping.
I rarely use traffic shaping, and if i do it on bigger hardware. I would have to do some tests on an ALIX.
Maybe someone else already has experience.

  • ALIX 2d13< – same as 2D3 with an added port header i believe, same hardware performance specs

I can Pull 37mbit on my comcast connection while using HFSC (m1, d, m2) to mirror 'powerboost' and there is CPU headroom to do more.

From the below: total throughput UP + DOWN = 4256445 bytes/sec or 34051560 bits / sec (34Mbit).  I have hit 37+, but didn't manage that testing just now.

PFTOP on my setup -- note pftop is BYTES not BITS, so multiply x 8.

sidenote:  Can you change pftop to bits vs bytes.  90% of the time i'm thinking in bits
