with pfsense in beta i was starting the plans for a roleout to upgrade all of my old and aging firewalls.

I've played with the soekris 4801's and they get the job done, but they dont see to have a 1u case

any one out there ran across a small cheep wrap type platform that comes in a 1u case?

This is merely an opinion, but if you're going to go that route, the pricepoint almost makes sense togowita mini-itx mainboard with a bootable onboard compact-flash reader (or even a laptop hard drive and save configs to the compact flash!).

I don't have a formal affiliation with them, but I've had good luck with http;//www.servercase.com, and even www.minibox.com has some mini-itx systems that fit the bill.  You'd get a bit more cpu oompf as a side benefit, and price winds up being comparable.  The case itself is your larger expense.

Side note though - I wouldn't mind a 1u, tastefully done, 4801 case either.  Perhaps if we can come up with a design, and enough people are interested, we could take it to a fabricator?  That would allow us to individually "brand" our firewalls as well by placing our own logos on them.

Well I finely got a hold of some one at soekris, she said they do make a 1u case but its a custom job and I would have to get a hold of the sales guy
he only responds by email. I have yet to get any responds from any email I've ever sent to sales over the past year.

Ive found a place here in australia that makes 1RU WRAP/net4801 boxes. They look pretty good and will most likely get one myself.
Even have redundent server setups with 2x WRAP/net4801's in one box

Btw, Yawarra is a recommended vendor that has supported the project by donating hardware.

Also Nexcom makes some nice 19" rack mount 1U units that boot off of CF with MUCH MUCH more CPU than the WRAP or 4801 have (and nicer NICs too).

And MUCH MUCH more noise!  I would not want to sleep anywhere near a nexcom.

I don't make it a habit to have 19" racks in my bedroom ;-P

Or work near one for that matter.  They are so loud that they are only suitable for a datacenter or a basement.

And thats the old three way trade-off…  Pick any two of FAST QUIET CHEAP

Silent / near silent computers are relatively easy to build, but that comes at a price.  And More Speed makes heat, which has to be removed somehow.  And airflow is the most common way for doing that....  etc etc.

Sometimes I wonder if its reasonable to cool an entire 19" cabinet with some hefty large slow speed fans, rather than having lots of spuddy little fans whirling at top speed.
