PfSense Behind Sky Modem Router Help

  • Unfortunately I'm pretty much forced to use a Sky Sagem modem router at the moment by my UK ISP (Sky) with their MER stuff and am having problems setting up PfSense behind it.
The router has a custom firmware and is the model that allows custom port forwarding etc.

I've tried setting up as follows:

    Sagem Router (192.168.5.1) -> PfSense WAN (192.168.5.2) -> LAN 192.168.1.*

The Sagem router has a static IP (DHCP is disabled in the router) and is set up under WAN in PfSense. I have the WAN port as a static IP there and used the Sagem router IP for the gateway… I hope that's right...

I've tried adding the PfSense IP (both WAN and LAN just in case!) to the DMZ setting in the router and have also tried forwarding all ports to the same with no luck.
I can access the PfSense menu through the LAN at the WAN interface IP which seems strange to me...

I wonder if I have missed something stupid or if there is some arcane firewall rule or the like that may be lacking...

Could anyone help me with this please?

Have you read this: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,48663.0.html ?
pfSense can do MER with an appropriate modem depending on if you have ADSL or VDSL (fibre).

How have you tried testing the port forwarding? It is unlikely to "work" unless the incoming connects to the modem arrive on the modem's WAN interface.

What are you expecting to happen when you test?

Expected behaviour. The access attempt is to the IP address of a pfSense interface hence to the pfSense server listening on the appropriate TCP port.

What are you expecting to happen when you do this?

  • Many thanks for the replies.
I looked at http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,48663.0.html not realising that the MER login issue with Sky had been resolved and was able to get this working with a Draytek Vigor 100 I had sitting so no longer need the awful Sky router.
    Thank you

    Nice.  :)
Did you have to sniff the username/password or use the generator?

  • I used the generator. At first it wouldn't connect and pfSense couldn't get a DHCP IP for the WAN interface. I left it overnight and it was working the next day. Sadly, after restarting the pfSense router, it won't connect again so I'm back to the Sky router for the moment…
