I'm trying to run the embedded version on a 40G hard drive on a Watchguard X700.

I followd instructions elsewhere on the forum and installed from a CD to an HDD in the laptop then transferred the HDD to Watchguard and booted, console came up (once I'd switched to a nullmodem cable) and I entered ufs:ad2s1a as the instructions said.

Boot continued until I got to the  interface setup section, then it all went wrong:

**If you are not going to use VLANs, or only for optional interfaces, you should
say no here and use the webConfigurator to configure VLANs later, if required.

Do you want to set up VLANs now [y|n]? n

NOTE  pfSense requires AT LEAST 1 assigned interface(s) to function.
If you do nOct 30 23:40:37 init: /bin/sh on /etc/rc terminated abnormally, going to single Oct 30 23:40:37 init: NSSWITCH(_nsdispatch): nis, passwd_compat, endpwent, not found, and no fallback provided

Enter full pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:**

If anyone can offer a suggestion on how to fix this, I would be grateful.

Hmm, well that's very odd. So odd in fact that I would suspect something fundamental like a bad harddrive, corrupted download, bad cable or broken box.
Have you run any tests to rule out the above?

I installed the full version in that HDD in the laptop and it went beyond that point OK and had me picking network interfaces etc which perhaps implies the HDD and download are OK. I then did an install of the embedded version before fitting back in the watchguard.

When the boot fails in the watchguard and it drops into the shell, then I can run shell commands OK so the box is not completely broken.

I'm not sure what the software is trying to do when it fails, is there any way to restert it at that point so it can try again?

How did you do the install of the embedded version? You may have ended up with a mixture of two environments that were never designed for "peaceful coexistence".

To install the embedded version I booted from the live CD and ran the easy install then selected embedded kernel.

To rule that out I think you should format the drive and start over.
