First pFsense Install going South! ( ROOT MOUNT ERROR )

  • The target machine is a HP EliteBook 8530p Notebook Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz

    • Downloaded pfSense-2.0.1-RELEASE-i386.iso.gz

    • Extracted files with 7-Zip to folder on desktop

    • Imgburn used to create Image file from files and folders.

    • Selected all folders except [BOOT] to be included

    • Options Tab using default settings

    • Restrictions Tab using 1999 default settings

    • Under the Bootable Disk Tab, I select the Bootable_NoEmulation.img which is located in the [BOOT] folder.

There are many different option for data images. I think I have performed all possible combinations, assuming it must be the problem.

So I decided to install VirtualBox on my workstation as I was getting tired of burning coasters, but still getting the same results using VirtualBox as shown in the pic.

I did do a test installing FreeBSD 8.3 on the laptop. Everything went buttery smooth. So what's the problem here…..I have run out of ideas!

So much more that could be add to the post, will work on it later if needed.

  • I know its trivial, but I would change the OS type off Windows XP to something more inline with what you are putting on there. Can you use your "coasters" to boot up another machine?

  • Netgate Administrator

What devices does it list if you type ? at the prompt?

  • That's the usual symptom where you're booting from USB and need boot option 3 ("Boot from USB") at the initial boot menu.

  • Just downloaded the new 2.0.2 iso image and guess what …... no problem booting.

  • I had the same problem (ROOT MOUNT ERROR) with USB mem stick. Also tried external usb CD.
Choosing boot psSense with ACPI disabled, I finally installed pfSense
