I don't have a serial port. I was looking at a usb to usb null modem cable and was wondering if it would allow me to connect to pfsense console from another computer.

      Cable I was looking at:

It probably would but you would have to configure pfSense to use the cable for it's console port which may be a problem.
Since the serial port would only exist once the drivers for the USB converter had loaded getting to pfSense to use it as the system console port could be tricky.
So you don't have serial port on either your pfSense box or your client machine?

Well actually I'm using the Intel DQ77KB motherboard for pfsense, and it does have an onboard serial port via an internal header. My client machine doesn't have a serial port at all. What would you suggest I buy?

I see that it has HDMI out, it doesn't work with pfSense?

You can use a Serial-to-USB converter, it works fine with my Watchguard X750E..

Yes, I use a budget USB-serial converter. I bought the cheapest one I could find on Ebay. It works fine with everything I've connected it to.  :) It uses an FTDI chip (or something that appears to be an FTDI chip).

Yes it works fine except I have my main computer hooked up my monitors hdmi port. So I thought a serial cable would be best for my situation.

In addition to the serial-to-usb cable wouldn't I also need something similar to the following?

                http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Serial-Motherboard-Header-PLATE9M16/dp/B001Y1F0HW/ref=pd_sim_pc_3

Also my case has only 1 expansion slot which is already dedicated to a 2 port nic. I'm thinking I could just run a cable from the serial port header on the motherboard outside the case through a slot I could make. Any recommendations for that particular cable?

Yes you will need something to convert the header to a 9pin 'D' socket. Also you will need a null modem cable. The USB to serial converter just gives you a serial port it doesn't do the cable cross-over required to talk to another serial port.
No recommendations I'm afraid. Whatever you can get locally.

So if I understand you correctly I would need three parts.

serial header to 9 pin D adapter

                    null modem cable

                    serial to usb adapter
