What sort of modem do you have: cable? xDSL? something else?

How are you supposed to talk with the modem: DHCP? PPPoE? something else?

And how do you know your even connected to the ISP?  If you connect a PC to the modem does it get an IP?

It is a cable modem and goes by dhcp. I can plug it into a regular router and works. I can plug it into a pc directly and it works. Plug it into pfsense and the status goes to green but no address. So strange. Thanks for the help

So this is a REAL LONG shot, but saw this a while back where the hops to the dhcp server in the isp was over 16, and the default pfsense/freebsd dhclient uses a TTL of 16, I had compiled a different version with a 128 ttl and that fixed up the issue.

            Here is that thread

Again prob something else, but hey simple enough to check how many hops to your dhcp, or what ttls listed - quick sniff show you that.

You should do a packet capture of when it is working and when its not to really tell what is the issue

Wow it took me longer to give this a try than what I thought. So, I was finally able to get this going. All I had to do was click on  "Insert my local MAC address" that did the trick. Everytime I kept talking to the ISP tech support, he couldnt see my pfsensebox. With the other ISP, he could always see my pfsense box..so once I clicked on  Insert my local MAC address it worked instantly..

                      Thanks for all the responses
