I've read just about every resource I can find on the PFSense traffic shaping abilities, but I still have a few basic questions.

Why do I see traffic in the default queues that the wizard creates before I create any firewall rules to put traffic in them?

My PFSense installation has 3 interfaces. LAN, DMZ, and WAN. I have Polycom video conferencing equipment on the DMZ network that I want to prioritize over anything else including LAN. Would I just need queues to prioritize the video conferencing traffic on the DMZ and WAN interfaces or all 3?

      Thanks.

Traffic needs to go somewhere. Uncategorized traffic (traffic which is not directed somewhere else by a rule) falls within the default queue for that interface. There must be 1 default queue for each interface.

Which scheduler are your trying to configure? (PRIQ, CBQ, HFSC)

If it ain't broke, you haven't tampered enough with it
