I'm running a fraternity network here, a pretty basic one with wired 10/100 going to every room, up through switches, into a single port that goes through a server and then into a modem.

The server is running a new copy of PFsense 1.01 livecd. I'm somewhat of a newbie to networking, but I'm saddled with the job, so I want to get it working.

What happens when I run the configuration is that it detects both LAN interfaces, changes their status to "up", but will not detect that it is connected to the internet (does not autodetect WAN, even though it is hooked directly through ethernet into the modem).

It does autodetect WAN if I hook it into a router, which is then hooked into the modem, but then I cannot access the internet from any computer on the network.

Am I doing something wrong here?

        what is your wan?
        adsl?
is your modem working as a bridge or as a hybrid modem/router?

We do what we must, because we can.
